“Haiti Today”
As Haitian-American students in the United States passionate about staying informed of affairs concerning Haiti, we formed a network amongst ourselves in which we could share news, articles, and events with each other. Unfortunately, having grown up in the United States and now perusing higher education we have realized that there is an accepted ignorance when it comes to Haiti and its affairs in this society. Too many make false assumptions and stereotypes about Haiti and her people because of the lack of information available to them. This is a hard battle to fight since it is ingrained in our society to accept such stereotypes as well as the lack of adequate coverage in our media.
We feel that it is important for us to stay informed as we are the key towards any possibility of improvement from the current status quo of our dear Haiti. It starts with us! It is our responsibility not just as Haitians, and Haitian-Americans, but as students and professionals to at a minimum, stay accurately informed of what is happening.
Knowledge is power, and there is power in numbers. Knowledge, increases our strength and better equips us for the uphill battle which anybody dedicated to Haiti will no doubt face. With this blog, we hope to provide a place where others can stay abreast of affairs concerning Haiti, the Caribbean, and its Diaspora in a wide variety of topics and interests, as well as stimulate the exchange of ideas and thoughts.
By increasing the number informed, we decrease the stereotypes that we face. By stimulating thought, we increase the chances for a stronger Haiti, and reduced ill-treatment of Haiti and its Diaspora in the future. By further developing our network among students and professionals, we perpetuate the pride that those before us instilled in us, and will be better equipped to pass on such pride to the next generation even in the face of the negative light in which we are portrayed.
